How should I sing?
You should choose a singing method that works for you. Many teachers will claim that their method is the best. What you are looking for is a method or technique that helps you with breathing management, tone, resonance, articulation, and of course the principals of singing.
My voice doesn’t work, did I do something wrong? What do I do?
There are a number of things that can cause your voice to fail you. If you think about how you sound while you are singing, then you might not sound your best. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, you will be sluggish and won’t be able to get your voice to respond as it should. Your voice will feel tired if you’ve spent too much time singing the day before. Your signing muscles are very similar to the other muscles in your body. Working out is fine, but they need a rest after the workout. Emotions can have their affect on your voice as well. If you cry, your vocal cords may swell, which needs to be worked around or remedied somehow.
Do I have to be fat to have a big voice?
No. Your voice has nothing to do with the size of your waist. If it were the case, then all large people would have a great voice. Actually having more weight can cause more problems in the long run, especially with moving and breathing. If you have been used to moving under a lot of weight, then it shouldn’t really be an issue. The size of your throat and head make a bigger difference in your voice than your belly.
My voice is really scratchy, do I have nodes?
You need to put your vocal cords through a lot of abuse to get nodes. You can’t get nodes from yelling for your favorite team for one day. Naturally they would swell, but it would take much more abuse to give them nodes. Just remember that nodes are like calluses. If you don’t abuse the cords, the problem will not exist. Sing in the high range if you are concerned. Nodes usually affect the higher part of your voice. If the sound is husky only in the middle part of your voice, you probably have another kind of swelling other than nodes.
What’s the difference between a coach, accompanist, and a voice teacher?
Your coach will be someone that plays the piano well and can teach you the basics of singing. A coach will teach you many different things, such as a singing style that works for you, and finding places to breathe in the song. A coach helps with some basic tips on technique and supports the work of your voice teacher.
A pianist or accompanist is someone who plays the piano for you to practice singing but doesn’t offer advice. An accompanist is not cheaper than a coach though.
The voice teacher is the technique specialist. While the coach has knowledge of technique of course, the voice teacher is the expert. The voice teacher may not play the piano so well but should make up for it with in knowledge and advice on your singing technique. In your voice lesson, you can expect to work at least half of the session on technique and the other half applying that technique to repertoire.

Public Speaking Techniques
How to handle questions from an audience can often be the deciding factor as to how your presentation is received. If you’re pitching for business, then it’s absolutely vital to handle questions well.
1. Be ready for questions – When you write your presentation, think about what you’re likely to be asked and what your answer is going to be. Maybe you won’t want to answer a particular question there and then, so think about what you’ll say to satisfy the questioner.
2. Confirm at the start – You may decide to take questions as you go or at the end of your presentation. Whatever you decide, make it clear at the start and do not change your mind. I would suggest questions at the end in a short presentation; if you take questions as you go, then your timing will get knocked out. And always remember, an audience won’t forgive you for taking half an hour when you were only scheduled to speak for fifteen minutes.
3. Never finish with questions – Far better to ask for questions five or ten minutes before the end, deal with the questions and then summarise for a strong finish. Too many presentations finish on questions and the whole thing goes a bit flat – particularly if you don’t get any.
4. Listen – When asked a question, listen and look like your listening. It may be something you’ve heard a million times before. Treat the questioner with respect and don’t trivialise their point.
5. Thank the questioner – It’s only polite, it shows respect and it gives you a bit more time to consider your answer.
6. Repeat the essence of the question – Some people may not have heard the question so your answer may not make any sense to them. It can also be irritating for them not to hear the question. Again, it gives you more time to think of the answer and it makes you look so clever and in control.
7. Answer to everyone – Do not fall into the trap of only answering the questioner. If they happen to be near the front then you could end up having a conversation with them and exclude everyone else.
8. Keep it simple – Many speakers, when it comes to questions, have become more relaxed and the fact that someone is interested enough to ask them a question, leads them to go on too long with the answer – DON’T.
9. Don’t bluff or bluster – If you do not know the answer to a question, say so and find out. Suggest to the questioner that you’ll ‘phone them or come and see them with the answer. It can even be a good way to make further contact after the presentation.
As we all know, it is possible that you may not be asked any questions and you then have that awkward silence. People may be thinking about what you have just said and may need more time to ask. They can also be a bit shy and may take some time to speak out. Why not have a question of your own prepared and say something like. “You may be asking yourself ?” If you still fail to get any questions then go straight into your summary and closing statement.
Handling a question and answer session well, demonstrates your professionalism and reflects on your message.

As an owner of a business establishment, you are not only responsible for the people under your care and supervision, but you are also responsible for the safety of all equipment found in such premises. Safety workplace issues need to be addressed properly in order to ensure the utmost protection of both assets. Part of ensuring safety in the workplace is to have a complete fire safety plan based on a properly conducted fire risk assessment carried out by certified professionals. From this assessment, suggestions would then be made in terms of what equipment is missing, what areas need to be repaired, what other installation have to be done, and so on.
Is training required?
In the UK, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is an encompassing set of regulations mandating various requirements related to fire safety in public structures, including factories, warehouses, offices, shops, educational and healthcare premises, theatres and cinemas, and so on. Among other things, these regulations are meant to address safety workplace issues. Part of such body of regulations includes mandatory fire safety training for all employees in different working conditions. As a business owner, you definitely have to have your employees undergo basic fire safety training. This training will provide crucial knowledge to help them combat fires and other emergencies
What are the basic training contents?
For starters, fire safety training includes three main components: basic fire knowledge, usage of equipment, and fire marshal duties. Basic fire training includes lectures on the sources of fires, the so-called ‘fire triangle’, fire risks, fire doors and exits, and fire safety signs. In this part of the training, your employees will learn about these basic concepts that they will be able to apply effectively during emergency situations. This leads to the second component, which features lectures on how to use equipment, such as fire extinguishers, and the like. The third component refers to fire marshal duties, or those actions that need to be done in case of an actual fire.
Who are qualified to provide training?
In the UK, there are various companies that can provide fire safety training conducted by certified professionals. A quick online research can yield various sites that may direct you to online courses and programs that you can assess and avail of depending on your company’s needs. Those that offer training can also provide you with a free fire risk assessment of the business premises so that they may be able to design a training plan, which is suitable to your company’s unique needs. Before choosing a training provider, it is a good idea to check out two or three programs that you would like to explore further and then talk to their respective representatives so that you can choose the ideal safety training program among these.
As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In ensuring fire safety in the workplace, undertaking the proper procedures will save you more money in the long run and, more importantly, help you protect your business interests.

The home is the place where we all spend most of our time. This is also the place in which we live with our loved ones. Thus, our living environment should not just be comfortable and aesthetically pleasant but must also ensure that various safety accidents can be prevented at any time. For those who are living in apartment buildings or high-rise flats, the need to stress safety is especially important. In the UK, some form of fire safety training is required for building occupants. This training provides useful information and teaches building occupants some essential skills related to prevention and safety.
Apart from this, there should also be a proper set of equipment and safety signs installed throughout the building in order to help the occupants prevent safety accidents from occurring, or in such a case that the fire has become unmanageable, find the proper route to a nearby fire exit. Nevertheless, you should not just depend on equipment and signs provided by the building supervisors, you should also take the necessary steps to further improve safety in the home. Here are some useful tips we have rounded up.
Conduct a proper risk assessment procedure
The first and most important thing that you can do to prevent safety accidents from occurring in your home is to undertake a quick risk assessment. Since this is meant for the home, you do not necessarily have to hire a professional if you are short on budget. However, if you really want to ensure safety, then you may enlist the help of a professional to do this. This assessment, when conducted properly, will identify problem areas in your home that could lead to potential accidents. Faulty wiring, use of flammable materials near combustible liquids, materials that have not been treated, and leaking gas pipes are some of the things that can be identified through proper assessment.
Arm yourself with proper knowledge regarding fire safety
Prevention is always better than cure. If you really wish to have a safe home, then arm yourself with the right knowledge and skills to do this. Your local community may provide free basic safety training to those who are interested to enrol. There are also companies that provide free lessons online. Through this fire safety training, you will be able to know about things like the fire triangle, the different classes, the different kinds of extinguishers you need in your home and their various uses, as well as other useful information you might not have learned yourself.
Draw up a fire safety plan
Now that you have strengthened your knowledge of home safety, it is time to put this into action by drawing up a safety plan for your home. Since each home has a different organizational layout, you can draw up a diagram or map; locate high-risk areas that need extinguishers, smoke alarms, etc.; and then devise an effective and easy to use escape route from your flat to the nearest fire escape. As part of your safety plan, you may also include the task of monitoring your equipment for damages and dead batteries. This is also important because equipment that have dead batteries or have been damaged will prove to be useless just when you need them the most.

In order to provide useful instructions during emergencies, provide warnings, cautions and prohibitions, or even to direct building occupants to find ways to escape and undertake safe fire evacuation, proper signs should be installed throughout the building. Let us take a look at essential information you need to know about these safety signs—this knowledge could help save your life in the future.
These signs must conform to standards set by the UK Government
The proper design, colours, shapes, sizes, and even locations of fire safety signs in public buildings in the UK are all covered by the regulations included in BS 5499:Part 1:1990. In the UK, complementary requirements for fire safety signs are also imposed by both the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997 and the Fire Precautions Act 1971. One benefit of standardizing these fire safety signs is that people can learn to recognize and understand these when they see such signs in every public place that they go to. For example, repeated exposure to the same ‘Fire Exit’ signs will definitely maximize retention, facilitating effective fire evacuation should the need arise.
Fire safety signs are classified into different categories
So as not to confuse the different signs and the purposes for which they have been installed, safety signs have been classified into: ‘Mandatory’, ‘Supplementary’, ‘Fire Equipment’, ‘Safe Condition’, ‘Warning’, and ‘Prohibition’. Signs that are considered ‘Mandatory’ have a circular shape featuring a prominent white symbol or text splashed on a blue background. One classic example of this sign is the one which says ‘Fire Door-Keep Shut’. ‘Supplementary’ signs have a square or oblong shape and have a black text on a white background. These complement existing signs, as in the case of directional arrows used along with common ‘Fire Exit’ signs. One of the most important set of signs in the lot, ‘Fire equipment’ direct users to the location of crucial fire equipment required during emergencies. These come in a square-shaped shape with a white symbol or text splashed on a bright red background.
Meanwhile, ‘Safe Condition’ signs are typified by the ‘Fire Exit’ sign. These fire safety signs are usually made of white symbol or text against a contrasting green background. The so-called ‘Warning’ signs are usually triangular in shape, have black symbols or text on a yellow background, completed by a black triangular band. A typical example of this type of sign is one which indicates, ‘Caution: Risk of Danger’. Finally, ‘Prohibition’ signs, more commonly seen owing to the nature of the signs themselves, have a circular shape with a prominent slashed red band in front. This type of sign usually features a black symbol on a white background inside a red circle with a red bar.
The installation and placement of these signs must conform to existing regulations
The Health and Safety Regulations 1996 mandates that all employers must provide specific fire safety signs. These must be installed in appropriate locations depending on the signs themselves. Especially for business establishments, full compliance with these regulations is required in order to procure a license to operate.
